BASKET DESCRIPTION
The Bolga Pan Basket is a thoughtful variation of our Siri Round Basket. By moving the cross handles to the sides, the basket opens into a wider mouth—creating easy access while maintaining its strong, balanced shape.
Inspired by Tradition
This design is inspired by traditional metal head pans, once used to collect and carry smaller amounts of water. In rural areas of Ghana, long walks to wells, rivers, and dams were part of daily life, and these pans were an essential household tool. The Bolga Pan Basket honors this history through form and function.
From Bolgatanga, With Meaning
Bolgatanga—often called Bolga—is a town that unexpectedly became a second home. Known as a craft center of Ghana’s Upper East Region, Bolga is famous for its large central market and rich weaving tradition. Basket weaving is a vital craft within close-knit communities and serves as the main source of income for many widows, single mothers, grandmothers, and families—and for some men as well.
With every visit, the bond with the weavers grows stronger despite language and cultural differences. Many of the artisans are older women caring for children and grandchildren. While their lives may be simple, their strong social connections and shared weaving culture are deeply inspiring and something to be cherished.
Handwoven & Sustainable
Each Bolga Pan Basket is handwoven from elephant grass (vete vere plant)—a locally harvested, sustainable material. The grass is tightly woven to create a sturdy, long-lasting form. The side handles are carefully wrapped in goat leather, protecting the weave and adding comfort and durability.
A simple basket takes 2–3 days to complete, and every piece is made with care, patience, and skill—telling a story of craftsmanship, resilience, and tradition.
